Take us for example, we are a digital marketing company. You’d expect people who are searching for our services to use phrases like ‘what is SEO?’ or ‘keyword research’. So these keywords and phrases are reflected in our content (like this blog, for example!) 

Conducting keyword research is essentially how you find which keywords you should be using in your own content. What are people searching for when trying to find the services you offer? 

How to find keyword ideas 

Start thinking of the different categories and topics that are relevant to your business. Start broad, and don’t worry about getting too specific right away.

  • Brainstorm a list of broad topics 

For example, if you’re a bakery you might break down your topics by the types of baked goods you sell, like cakes, croissants, cupcakes, brownies, cookies, etc. It can help to use a Google document or excel spreadsheet and create tabs for each of these main topics you’ve brainstormed.

  • Use keyword tools to find specifics 

This is where the fun begins! You really need to put yourself in the shoes of your customer, and think how you would go about discovering your business if you were them. If you’re a marketer with little customer-facing interaction it can help to speak with your sales team to see the language that new leads typically use.

You can start with a simple brainstorm. Let’s go back to our bakery example for this one, focusing on the “cakes” category. Since you make cakes for special occasions you might write down some keywords like “wedding cakes,” “affordable wedding cakes,” or “stylish wedding cakes”. 

Analyse the strength of your keywords

 The easiest way to accomplish this is with a paid keyword research or SEO tool. Ahrefs, Semrush and Ubersuggest are some of the most popular. Wordtracker and Ubersuggest both have free versions you can use to start. 

  • What is the exact search term? Make sure your keyword phrase matches the precise search term people use.
  • How high is the search volume? If no one uses a keyword phrase, it won’t do you much good to structure a strategy around it.
