So you have an Instagram account and you post regularly. That’s it, right?… Wrong! Since its inception, Instagram has become a powerhouse for image sharing. To really help your business shine, you need to know how to use the platform’s features to your advantage. Let’s find out how.
Over 1.16 billion monthly users are active on Instagram currently. Daily users spend about 8 minutes on the app and 500 million use the stories feature daily.
Switch to a business profile if you haven’t already
Before you start thinking about a marketing strategy, you need to switch to a business account. It’s easy to do this, just head to your settings, account, and click on ‘switch to business profile’. Follow the steps and tah-dah! You now have access to all the benefits.
What are these benefits? We hear you ask. Well, you can add a contact button to the top of your profile, making it easier for customers to call, email or head straight to your website.
You can also access Instagram’s analytics tools. Through ‘insights’ you can view impressions, engagement and even a breakdown of the demographic of your followers. Information like their age, gender, location and their most active hours can be super useful when it comes to tailoring your content.
Post at the right times
You want to post consistently so you don’t fall off your customers’ radar, but you also don’t want to overdo it. The best way to get around this is to post at the most optimum times based on your audience.
Hubspot has posted a really handy guide for the best time to post on each day, and they’ve even split it into industry categories. Super useful!
For exploring more fine-tuned times to post, you can utilise the ‘most active’ stats from the insights panel. This will show you exactly when people have interacted with your posts in the past, and at what times.
Collect user-submitted photos
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could create great content without doing any of the hard work? There is actually an easy way to do this… user-submitted photos.
Hashtags are a great way to find some content to repost, but always gain the users’ permission to do so. Another strategy to gain this kind of content is through competitions. GoPro uses the #featuredphotographer hashtag and repost the best image to their profile every week. It’s a win-win, they get great content without much effort, and they gain more exposure through the hashtag.
Engage, engage, engage!
If you want engagement, you have to engage too. Posting good content is great, but if you ignore comments and don’t interact with other profiles, you’ll have a lonely existence.
At a minimum, respond to comments users post on your feed. But also seek out popular accounts in your industry, follow them, and like and comment on their posts. Make yourself visible but don’t be pushy.
If someone tags you in a post, check it out and look for opportunities to engage. Can you share their post in your story?
