A ‘tone of voice’ is not what you say… but how you say it. When it comes to businesses, this comes across through written words rather than spoken- just to confuse things a little! 

As the majority of businesses are online nowadays, the way in which you get your words across on social media is increasingly important. In this weeks blog, we’ve outlined the ways in which you can find your brands inner tone of voice. 

What does your brand stand for?

The first thing to do is to strip back to the basics. Are you super environmentally minded? In which case your language will be very grounded. Are you very high end and luxurious? Your inner voice will likely be elegant and aspirational. Basically, the way your business comes across on social media is a reflection of the people behind the screen. 

Who is your audience?

Think about who your customers are and how you would speak to them in person. Would it be a relaxed, chatty conversation or a more formal affair? You don’t want to alienate potential clients the second they click through to your website or social page, so cracking the language is key. 


Keep it simple, stupid. Know when to change your tone depending on the clients needs. Also- don’t assume that people know the ins and outs of your industry. Explain any acronyms to avoid miscommunication.

A brand’s tone of voice should be distinctive, recognisable and unique. This may seem like a tall order until we consider the use of our own language in everyday life. We all use language, both written and spoken – in our own quirky way! 

It builds trust

There is a strong link between familiarity and trust. Because something familiar requires little effort to process mentally (we’re a lazy bunch!) we are more likely to feel at ease around it. Thinking along these lines, a company must be consistent in its use of language so that its writing becomes familiar to the customer. Creating a specific tone of voice plays a crucial part in this.
